    How to measure board feet

A board foot is a piece of wood 12 inches long, 12 inches wide and 1 inch thick, which is 144 cubic inches. Lumberyards use it to price hardwood and bulk softwood, so knowing it lets you compare quotes and avoid ordering too much.

Board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12

    Worked example

You need twelve 2x6 boards, each 10 feet long. One board is 2 × 6 × 10 ÷ 12 = 10 board feet, so twelve boards are 120 board feet. At $1.80 a board foot the stack costs $216.

    Questions people ask

How do you calculate board feet?

Multiply thickness in inches by width in inches by length in feet, then divide by 12. A 2x6 that is 10 feet long is 2 x 6 x 10 / 12 = 10 board feet.

Do you use nominal or actual size for board feet?

Lumberyards price softwood dimensional lumber by nominal size, so a 2x4 counts as 2 by 4. Rough-sawn hardwood is measured as it is sold, so use the thickness the yard quotes, such as 4/4 for 1 inch.

    What is 4/4, 5/4 and 8/4 lumber?

    Hardwood thickness in quarter inches. 4/4 is 1 inch, 5/4 is 1 1/4 inches, 8/4 is 2 inches. Enter 1, 1 1/4 or 2 as the thickness.

How many board feet are in a 2x4x8?

    2 x 4 x 8 / 12 = 5.33 board feet.
